The story of Caithness as told by the hosts of  De Oude Huize Yard 

Caithness was build by James Bain 1903 and you will find it in Stuart Street Harrismith. There are 15 rooms which were needed because of Mr Bain's 9 children. Mr. Bain named Caithness after his birthplace in Scotland. Mr. Bain laid the cornerstone on 27 June 1903.

The Bains families were divided into the Royals and Centrals.  (James was a Central Bain) according to the hotels they ran in Harrismith

The cast iron fence is something out of an era long gone.   

The detail reminds me of a buffalo head.

De Oude Huize with its landscaped garden, scenic views over Platberg mountain is an idyllic getaway. Situated in Harrismith, central South Africa – it's only three hours from Johannesburg to the North, three hours from Durban in the South and three and a half hours from Bloemfontein in the West. 

Harrismith is surrounded by koppies capped in sandstone, and surrounded by roads meandering through pastoral valleys and farms.

De Oude Huize is the best kept secret in the Eastern Free State, It is secluded, quiet and peaceful. 

Whether you are a local or international tourist the history displayed and recorded here is fascinating. 

Spaces in De Oude Huize have little cameo's of interest and treasures that are a wonder to behold - prompting happy memories of days gone by.

The bedrooms at De Oude Huize are huge, each one has its own unique style and is decorated with a quaint flavour of yesteryear, all en suite.
